International air travel from the US is set to hit its highest ever level this summer, according to Airlines for America (A4A).

The industry body has forecast that 222 million passengers will fly on US airlines between June 1 and August 31, an increase of 4.5 per cent from last year, with a record 31 million travellers on international flights.

The prediction came alongside A4A’s report on US carrier’s performance in Q1, in which it confirmed that airlines “achieved strong operational performance and improved profitability” despite a harsh winter.

The 10 publicly traded US passenger carriers covered in the results collectively reported net profit of $3.1bn, up 1.1 per cent on 2014, with revenues increasing 3.1 per cent year on year.
