Flag carrier Air India has confirmed one of its maintenance technicians has died after getting sucked into the engine of an A319 aircraft at Mumbai airport.

Flag carrier Air India has confirmed one of its maintenance technicians has died after getting sucked into the engine of an A319 aircraft at Mumbai airport.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening (December 16), happened when the aircraft was being moved from an airport gate in preparation for a flight to Hyderabad.

Air India chief executive Ashwani Lohani, who described the incident as a “tragic mishap”, said a pilot misjudged a signal and switched on the aircraft’s engine which sucked the nearby maintenance technician into the engine and killed them instantly.

An investigation into the incident by Air India is underway while the Indian government’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation has also ordered an inquiry.
