European carriers made small gains in the first half of the year, with passenger numbers up 3.3 per cent compared with H1 2013, according to trade body the Association of European Airlines.

More encouraging was a turnaround in air freight, with cargo volumes growing four per cent after several years of decline.

On the passenger side, long-haul traffic rose 4.7 per cent and short-haul by 2.9 per cent.
