Cathay Pacific has become the first airline to invest in US biofuel company Fulcrum BioEnergy.

The Hong-Kong-based airline has agreed a long-term supply agreement with Fulcrum for an initial 375 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel over 10 years (approximately two per cent of its current fuel consumption).

As part of the carrier’s ongoing biofuel strategy, and in support of its target of carbon-neutral growth from 2020, Cathay also has an option for further investment.

Fulcrum intends to break ground on its first commercial biofuel plant later this year and to build large-scale, waste-to-renewable jet fuel plants at multiple locations, primarily in North America.
