China Eastern Airlines has placed an order for 50 737NG aircraft from Boeing worth $4.6bn at current list prices.

Shanghai-headquartered China Eastern confirmed the transaction on Thursday (July 9) in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

The order aids China Eastern’s expansion into the low-cost carrier (LCC) market, where the aircraft will be operated by its Beijing-based subsidiary China United Airlines, a domestic airline transitioning into an LCC.

The first 10 aircraft will be delivered in 2017, with a further 25 due the following year, and the final 15 scheduled to arrive in 2019.
