Panama flag carrier Copa Airlines has penned a $6.6bn order for 61 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 aircraft with Boeing, marking the largest deal ever between a Panamanian and US-based company.

The deal was confirmed on Friday (April 10) during the Summit of the Americas at a signing ceremony attended by Panama’s president Juan Carlos Varela Rodriguez and US president Barack Obama.

The deal makes Copa the first airline in the region to fly the 737 MAX 9 on South American routes and further adds to its predominantly Boeing fleet, with its current fleet of 84 aircraft comprised of 72 737s and 12 Embraer ERJ-190s.
