The FAA is to investigate a computer failure at  its air traffic control (ATC) centre in Leesburg, Virginia which resulted in several hundred flight delays on Saturday (August 15).

The delays occurred at a number of east coast airports, with New York LaGuardia and Baltimore-Washington International Airport worst affected.

Despite operations resuming later on Saturday afternoon, there were further delays over the rest of the weekend as airlines tackled the backlog of delayed flights.

In an emailed statement to Bloomberg, the FAA said it is “continuing its root cause analysis to determine what caused the problem” and is working with airlines to minimise impacts to travellers.
