FAA Issues Syria Ban

US airlines have been prohibited from entering Syrian airspace by the FAA. In a formal notice to airmen, the FAA warned that “armed extremist groups in Syria are known to be equipped with a variety of anti-aircraft weapons which have the capability to threaten civilian aircraft”. The warning was justified by the fact that opposition groups have managed to shoot down several Syrian military aircraft. The FAA’s new notice replaces a previous one that “strongly advised” carriers to avoid Syria. On August 11, the FAA banned airlines from flying over Iraq because it was deemed “hazardous”.
