Air Mandalay has signed a purchase agreement with Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation (MAC) for up to 10 MRJ90 aircraft. The deal, which is worth up to $470m, includes a firm order for six of Mitsubishi’s regional jet and the purchase rights to an additional four. On delivery Air Mandalay will become the aircraft’s launch customer in Asia, outside of Japan. Air Mandalay currently operates three regional turboprops (one ATR42 and two ATR72s), and is looking to grow its route network, particulary to local tourist destinations. The MRJ90s are expected to be delivered at a rate of two aircraft a year from 2018 onwards. To date, MAC has 335 orders for its MRJ90 – 171 firm orders and 164 options; with the highest amount from SkyWest (100 firm and 100 options).
