HSBC is to provide funding to scale up Virgin Atlantic’s project to make low-carbon jet fuel from waste gases.

Virgin has been working for three years with energy company LanzaTech on a process that captures and converts gases generated by industrial steel production into jet fuel.

HSBC’s backing will enable the project to ramp up fuel production from sample size to provide sufficient fuel for a demonstration flight within the next 12 months, said the airline.
