Japan Air Commuter (JAC), a subsidiary of Japan Airlines (JAL), has placed an order for eight ATR 42-600s with one option and 14 purchase rights in a deal worth $496m at current list prices.

ATR said the deal is its first with a Japanese airline and will begin delivering the aircraft from 2017.

JAC said the order was made to replace its current regional aircraft operating on its main routes as well as to smaller island destinations in Japan.

Arata Yasujima, president of JAC, said the ATR 42-600 is “a perfect match” due to its economical, environmental and operational specifications.
