Indonesia’s Lion Air has signed a $1bn deal for 40 new ATR72-600 aircraft, making the airline ATR’s biggest ever customer.
Deliveries of the aircraft will start in 2017 and run into 2019. The deal takes firm orders for the newest generation ATRs to 100 aircraft.
Lion Air said that the ATR72s will be used across its three subsidiary airlines, Wings Air, Malindo Air and Thai Lion Air, to meet the growing demand forecast over the next five years and to develop other opportunities throughout Asia and emerging markets worldwide.
Lion Air has been operating ATR72s for five years. ATR’s CEO, Patrick de Castelbajac, thanked SACE, Italy’s Credit Export Agency, for its “strong financing support” which “considerably contributed to develop and consolidate” the partnership.
