German carrier Lufthansa said it has set a new efficiency record for fuel consumption in 2014, averaging just 3.84 litres of fuel per passenger over 100km.

Marking an improvement of 1.6 per cent over the previous year, Lufthansa’s figures are above IATA’s annual fuel efficiency targets for airlines of 1.5 per cent.

Lufthansa's cargo division meanwhile improved its fuel efficiency by 5.2 per cent year over year achieving consumption rates of 0.183 litres per tonne km.

Lufthansa said it expects further reductions in the coming years as a result of its investment in newer, more fuel efficient aircraft.
