TAP Portugal is updating cabin equipment for short- and medium-haul flights with lightweight seats from Recaro Aircraft Seating. Forty-one A320-family aircraft will be equipped with a total of 6,600 Recaro SL3510 and BL3530 seats.
Layout optimization allows 12 more seats to fit into A319s and A320s and 16 more in A321s. Nevertheless, Recaro CEO Mark Hiller says passengers will be more comfortable, thanks to the outstanding ergonomics of the seats.
And the new seats will be much lighter, saving fuel. Recaro estimates each converted aircraft will be up to 700 kilograms lighter. The Recaro SL3510 is one of the world’s lightest economy-class seats, weighing about nine kilograms, 40% less than conventional economy seats. Further, simplified design and fewer components keep maintenance costs exceptionally low.
The BL3530 has unique features for in-flight entertainment, connecting personal electronic devices and storing tablet PCs, smartphones and e-readers. A narrow, space-saving backrest enables efficient BL3530 cabin seating with spacing of 28 to 34 inches.
Apart from the A320 family, Recaro says the seats ware well-suited to the
Boeing 737. So far, 45 airlines have installed the BL3530 or its near cousin, the BL3520/RAC, on 2,200 aircraft, and seven airlines have installed the SL3510 on over 550 aircraft.
