Japanese carrier Nippon Cargo Airlines has cancelled an outstanding order for four 747 freighter aircraft from Boeing valued at $1.5bn.

The aircraft were part of an order placed by Tokyo-based Nippon Cargo with the OEM in 2007 which including eight firm orders and six options.

So far, eight of the original order have been delivered and are in active service in the cargo carrier’s fleet.

The cancellation coincides with Chicago-based Boeing cutting production rates of the 747 to just one a month following a fall in demand from the struggling cargo market.
