Qatar Airways is to join the oneworld alliance as early as next month, having shortened the typical 18-month process to just one year. The alliance has planned an induction date of October 30, 2013. Qatar is the first of the big three Gulf airlines to join an alliance, giving it a competitive edge against its rivals and raising questions as to whether Etihad and Emirates will do likewise. Qatar will add 20 destinations to the oneworld route map including, Ethiopia, Iran and Tanzania. In return, Qatar will gain access to Southern Europe and Africa.
