Qantas To Exit Jetstar Hong Kong

Australian carrier Qantas has confirmed it will no longer invest in the proposed Jetstar Hong Kong startup airline following a series of delays.

Qantas, along with fellow investors China Eastern Airlines and domestic investment firm Shun Tak Holdings, have withdrawn funding after growing frustrated in their attempts to get approval for the new carrier from Hong Kong’s aviation authorities.

The group’s efforts were dealt a further blow in June when the Hong Kong Air Transport Licensing Authority refused to grant the necessary air operator’s certificate to Jetstar Hong Kong as it failed to comply with the requirement to have its “principal place of business in Hong Kong.”

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said the plans had been “undermined by continual opposition” from rival carriers including Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines.
