Qantas Refutes Union’s Safety “Scaremongering”

Qantas has published a six-page rebuttal of claims by the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association that outsourced maintenance performed offshore was unsafe. Among many union allegations of unsafe work between 2003 and 2007 was one that a 747 had had three of its engines incorrectly installed. In its response Qantas said: "Regardless of geography, all our maintenance is done at facilities approved by CASA [Civil Aviation Safety Authority] and to Qantas' high standards." A union spokesman responded that the union didn’t consider CASA approvals a true measure of safety.
