Qantas and China Eastern have agreed a joint venture intended to complement similar cooperation deals that the Australian flag carrier has struck with Emirates and American Airlines.

A key benefit of the new agreement will be the co-location of the carriers’ operations in Terminal 1 at Shanghai International Airport.

The airlines also want to harmonise their schedules and launch new Australia-China routes.

If approved, the venture should commence in mid-2015. Qantas and China Eastern already have a codeshare agreement.
