Qatar Airways has increased its shareholding in International Airlines Group (IAG), parent company of British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia, to 15 per cent.

The Middle Eastern carrier previously bought a 10 per cent stake in IAG in January 2015.

Despite EU imposed restrictions meaning non-EU carriers are capped at owning a certain percentage of the continent’s airlines, Qatar said it may consider increasing its stake further over time within the allowable limits.

Akbar Al Baker, group chief executive of Qatar Airways, said its investment in IAG has so far helped deliver on its westbound strategy.
