US regional carrier Southwest Airlines has agreed to purchase three million gallons of renewable jet fuel a year from Colarado firm Red Rocks Biofuels (RRB).

The low-carbon aviation fuel is produced from unwanted forest wood (“forest residue”). RRB’s first biofuel plant is set to convert 140,000 tons of biomass into 12 millions of renewable fuels, including jetfuel and diesel.

Southwest will take its first delivery of the biofuel in 2016 and the blended product will be used at the carrier’s Bay Area operations.
