Southwest Airlines’ CEO Gary Kelly has confirmed that the carrier will change all 31 of the 737-700 it has on order for delivery in 2016 to the larger -800 aircraft.

Southwest Airlines’ CEO Gary Kelly has confirmed that the carrier will change all 31 of the 737-700 it has on order for delivery in 2016 to the larger -800 aircraft.

Kelly said in a conference call last Wednesday (May 13) that the order switch will bring “very nice” economic benefits to the airline and support growing demand for routes to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

The Dallas-based airline said the move will add 32 seats per aircraft, a 22 per cent increase from the -700s, and will bring its fleet of 787-800 aircraft to 135.
