United Airlines has confirmed it will invest around $100m for a five per cent stake in low-cost carrier Azul Brazilian Airlines to expand its Latin American footprint.

United Airlines has confirmed it will invest around $100m for a five per cent stake in low-cost carrier Azul Brazilian Airlines to expand its Latin American footprint.

The transaction, which is subject to the approval of Brazil’s government, will see the two carriers enter into a strategic partnership that will include a codeshare agreement and reciprocal loyalty programme benefits.

Jim Compton, United's vice-chairman and chief revenue officer, described Brazil as “an important market” for the airline’s global route network.
