United Airlines has applied for approval to begin a non-stop service from its hub in San Francisco to Chengdu, China. The carrier intends to operate a 787-8 three times a week from San Francisco International Airport to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. If approved, Chengdu will be United’s ninth non-stop destination in the Asia-Pacific region. Chengdu is the capital of China’s Sichuan province. It is the country's fourth largest city, with a population of approximately 14 million in the urban area. In recent years, Chengdu has been one of the country's fastest-developing cities economically.
