United Airlines has announced a net profit of $4.8bn for Q3 2015, a rise from the $924m posted by the carrier in the same period last year.

In a statement released on Thursday (October 22), Chicago-based United said the net profit included a $3.2bn tax benefit while low fuel prices contributed to a $1.1bn saving.

Despite the profit boost, revenues in the quarter declined by 2.4 per cent to $10.3bn, while total passenger revenue fell 3.8 per cent.

Earlier this week, United announced Brett Hart will become its acting chief executive after Oscar Munoz suffered a heart attack on Monday (October 19).
