US civil aviation accidents fell from 1,550 in 2011 to 1,539 in 2012, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). For the third consecutive year, there were no fatal accidents involving commercial air transport and for the sixth consecutive year, none in commuter air transport. Overall, the number of accidents rose to 1,471. Of these, 271 accidents were fatal, causing a total of 432 deaths, a lower rate than the year before. The accident rate, which was 6.78 per 100,000 flight hours, also saw a decline. Charter, air taxi, air tour, and air medical flights, posted decreases across all areas.
