Icelandic authorities have reduced the warning level concerning the Bardarbunga volcanic eruption from red to orange.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said it no longer detected any ash following the volcano’s second eruption yesterday (August 31).
The eruption in the Holuhraun lava field area, the third in the last week, was “calm but continuous”, the IMO said.
Air space was closed below 6,000ft on Sunday, far below the height required for commercial airlines.
Meanwhile, the volcanic eruption in Papua New Guinea has also calmed.
“The activity has subsided,” confirmed Jonathan Kuduon, a senior seismologist at the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory. “At the moment we are getting only discrete explosions.”
