Canadian carrier WestJet has rubbished rumours that one of its aircraft was hijacked.

A tweet from a flight-tracking website on Saturday (January 10) claimed that WestJet flight 2154 from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, had transmitted a hijack code via its transponders.

“WestJet has no evidence that such a code was ever transmitted,” the airline said in a statement.

“Both the flight crew and local air traffic control confirm that no such code was ever sent or received, and testing on the aircraft's transponder shows it is (and was) functionally normally."

The aircraft arrived in Puerto Vallarta safely as scheduled.
