AerSale Says It Has Better Flammability Solution

AerSale now has two supplemental type certificates from the FAA for installation of its AerSafe Fuel Tank Flammability Reduction system on 737NGs and 737 Classics.

AerSale now has two supplemental type certificates from the FAA for installation of its AerSafe Fuel Tank Flammability Reduction system on 737NGs and 737 Classics.

Sandra Mora, manager of technical services, estimates that AerSafe is about one quarter of the cost of the alternative nitrogen-inerting system over 10 years, and provides an effective low-maintenance solution to FAA’s Fuel Tank Flammability Reduction rule.

Mora adds that the new AerSale solution has several other advantages. There is no maintenance after installation, there are no mechanical parts that can fail, and no flight test is required after installation. In addition, “AerSafe has a lead time of less than six weeks, versus one year for the nitrogen-inerting system.”

And installation itself is brief, requiring downtime of only two days, versus 14 days for the nitrogen-inerting system. Installation can thus be done at the same time as a light-maintenance check or overnight, after the aircraft center tank is emptied. AerSafe does not require special tooling to remove and install its parts. And aircraft can be retrofitted without any structural changes.

Mora says AerSafe been installed on, or has commitments for installation, on aircraft at a number of customers. “However, due to the sensitive nature of our business and non-disclosure agreements with our clients, we cannot reveal any specific information.”

AerSale is currently in the process of obtaining an STC for the 757 and expects to receive it in coming months. An STC for the 767 is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2017.

“As for other models, it depends on whether the proposed amendment to the Airworthiness Directive, 14 CFR, Part 39.13, is approved later this year,” Mora notes. “If so, it will mandate all operators worldwide find a viable solution to the Fuel Tank Flammability Reduction rule.” With enough interest from customers, AerSale will then look into developing the AerSafe system for other aircraft models.
