Aviation Partners Boeing launches Split Scimitar Winglet Programme

Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) has launched its new Split Scimitar winglet programme with an order from United Airlines. This will involve retrofitting existing 737NG Blended Winglets by replacing the aluminium winglet tip cap with the new Scimitar version plus a new aerodynamically shaped Scimitar-tipped ventral strake. The new design was flight tested by APB in 2012 and showed aircraft drag reduction when compared with a basic blended winglet configuration. The initial programme will be used on 737-800s with the aim to have FAA certification for other aircraft such as the structurally provisioned and non-provisioned 737-900; 737-900ER, 737-BBJ and 737-700 by March 2014.
