The FAA has mandated that aircraft operating in most controlled U.S. airspace be equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) “Out” by 2020. Below is a list of avionics companies and MRO services that help companies prepare for this update.
1. ADS-B Product Line
Company: L-3 Avionics Systems
Product: Lynx Line of ADS-B Products
Specifications: This year, L-3 Aviation Systems launched its Lynx MultiLink Surveillance System line of ADS-B products. This family of products comprises four models, including an ADS-B In/Out model with a Wi-Fi display option for personal electronic devices and models for the display of ADS-B information on dedicated cockpit multifunction displays. The Lynx NGT-9000 model includes a touchscreen display that is a form-factor replacement for existing transponders. The unit also supports 1090ES (Mode S Extended Squitter) ADS-B Out and 1090 MHz and 978 MHz ADS-B In. All Lynx models provide ADS-B Out compliance to FAA 14 CFR 91.227.
2. Elementary Surveillance
Company: Rockwell Collins
Product: TDR Mode S Transponder
Specifications: The Mode S Elementary Surveillance from Rockwell Collins includes an eight-character aircraft identification parameter corresponding to that used in voice communication with air traffic services. The Flight ID, or aircraft identification parameter, is entered by a control device such as a radio tuning unit, control display unit, or dedicated transponder control unit. This product is in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization standards and recommended practices.
3. ADS-B Solutions
Product: GDL 84
Specifications: Garmin International offers a family of products consisting of ADS-B solutions designed to exceed the needs of operators around the world. These serve a variety of aircraft and operators, including experimental, general aviation, helicopter, business and transport aircraft. For aircraft without modern display technologies, Garmin’s GDL 84 is able to meet NextGen requirements without the need to overhaul the aircraft’s control panel. It also offers an all-inclusive option to wirelessly display weather and traffic on mobile devices, and meets regulatory requirements for ADS-B Out when operating below 18,000 ft.
4. Certified ADS-B Solution Services
Product: ADS-B Installation
Specifications: In November 2015, StandardAero completed its first certified ADS-B solution for a Falcon 50 aircraft. The service was completed at the company’s Augusta, Georgia, MRO facility. The system incorporated CMD Flight Solutions’ ADS-B DO260B upgrade and supplemental type certificate. The benefits of installing this system include increased fuel efficiency through better aircraft routing, along with increased safety and situational awareness for pilots. The Falcon 50 aircraft is now in full compliance with the FAA 2020 mandates.
5. ADS-B Out Solution by Retrofit
Product: ADS-B Services
Specifications: Last November, Avmax received the FAA Part 25 supplemental type certificate in conjunction with the Transport Canada Civil Aviation Administration approval of its ADS-B Out DO-260B ADS-B solution in the Bombardier Dash 8 100/200/300 aircraft. The company is now able to provide maintenance requirements in combination with retrofit for all its customers. Avmax offers a variety of options, including upgrade or exchange of current transponders, upgrade of existing ADC, complete wiring kits and STC packages for third-party completion. The approval provides for a stand-alone ADS-B Out solution by retrofit for the two existing transponders with the Rockwell Collins TDR-94(D) Mode S Transponders. The installation generally takes 4-6 days to complete.
6. Commercial TCAS
Product: SmartTraffic CAS 100 Systems
Specifications: This system from Honeywell offers three models of commercial TCAS. It is equipped with processing capacity to incorporate future ADS-B In functionality and is available for the Airbus A320 series (A318, A319, A320, A321), A330, A340, Boeing 737 and 777, Dassault F5X, Embraer E2, Gulfstream G600 and SuperPuma. Honeywell offers three versions of commercial TCAS within the TPA-100 TCAS processor family.
7. Avionics Services Including ADS-B
Company: Trine Aviation Services
Product: ADS-B Installation
Specifications: Trine Aviation Services offers a variety of services for avionics installation and repair. The company provides customized upgrades, including instrument panel fabrication to ADS-B compliant equipment. It offers the latest features from Garmin, Genesys Aerosystems, Technisonic Industries Ltd. and Avidyne, among others. The services include fabrication of wiring harnesses, avionics upgrades and repairs, autopilot installations, slide repairs, IFR certifications and RVSM recertifications.
8. Civilian and Military ADS-B Systems
Product: ADS-B System
Specifications: Thales offers civil and military aircraft ADS-B systems that have been successfully tested in flight. The system is a stand-alone airborne ADS-B In extended squitter receiver with a reception range of over 100 nm. The applications include air-to-air surveillance, aircraft situation awareness on runway, UAV anti-collision sensor, better aircraft merging and spacing, and conformance to agreed 4-D trajectory. The system has a power supply of 28 volts DC and handles more than 50 aircraft simultaneously.
