Haeco Americas opened its largest hangar in the U.S. today—a 250,000 sq. ft. facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, that simultaneously can house eight narrowbodies or two widebodies and two narrowbodies.
The MRO broke ground for the $60 million facility in August 2016. It includes more than 176,000 sq. ft. of hangar space, which is about twice as big as each of the other four hangars at its Greensboro headquarters. The hangar originally was supposed to be finished in the fourth quarter 2017.
While there is not a specific customer for this new hangar, HAECO will use it for existing clients, such as Alaska Airlines, and is “hopeful to announce new customers soon,” says David Kelly, VP marketing and strategy.
The hangar, which Haeco says is not quite finished but will be soon, should meet U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification. Haeco used Ghafari for the initial design and to help with the contractor selection process.
When this hangar is full, it could generate 500 new jobs for aircraft technicians and support staff.
