Lufthansa Technik (LHT) and Rolls-Royce have completed a pilot project exploring closer cooperation between OEMs and MROs in the technical care of mature engines.

The year-long project looked at reducing the maintenance costs of mature Trent 500 engines used to power A340-500/600 aircraft.

It found reductions in costs were achievable through changes in workscope, improved use of used material, and optimised processes in the workshops.

LHT and Rolls-Royce have confirmed they will look at collaborating on future projects, with an expansion into other engine types mooted.
