Construction has started on new “ultra-modern” wheel and brake workshop at Frankfurt’s East Harbour for Lufthansa Technik (LHT) following a ceremonial ground breaking last week (July 3).

The 14,500m2 facility is set to open in 2017, replacing the MRO’s existing workshop at Frankfurt Airport and will, predicted Johannes Bussmann, chairman of LHT’s executive board, enable it to increase output from 26,000 serviced wheels and 4,500 serviced brakes each year to 32,000 and 6,000 units respectively.

The MRO is investing close to €60m ($66m) in the new plant which has been designed to ensure a lean operation and incorporates energy saving technologies.
