N3 Engine Overhaul Services (N3), the Rolls-Royce and Lufthansa Technik joint venture, has been granted Part-145 authorization by German regulator The Federal Aviation Office (LBA) to become a repair center for the Trent XWB engine powering the A350 aircraft.

In a statement released on Monday (November 7), Arnstadt-based N3 said it will start receiving planned deliveries of the Rolls-Royce engine type in “the coming years”.

The LBA approval comes before the scheduled delivery of the first A350 from Airbus to Lufthansa, expected over the winter, which will see Lufthansa Technik cover all aircraft maintenance and spare parts.

In preparation for the Trent XWB, N3’s mechanics are currently using a training engine to test tools and to apply assembly processes approved by LBA.

N3 director and general manager Alexander Stern said: “With the operating license for the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine we have secured our future. The A350 engine will become a dominant feature of N3 Engine Overhaul Services’ business in the coming years.”
