Australian flag carrier Qantas Airways has developed a new in-flight entertainment (IFE) offering with Lufthansa Technik (LHT) by replacing back seat screens with wireless tablets.

After passing approval testing following 10 months of development, the iPads will be installed in the business class section on all of Qantas’ 717 aircraft and will mean passengers no longer have to hold the device while watching them.

Alongside LHT’s product division, Qantas also worked with German seat manufacturer ZIM Flugsitz to install the devices.

Franziska Voerner, project manager at LHT, claimed that the wireless solution is easier to maintain and less expensive than a built-in seat monitor.
