US airline group Republic Airways has confirmed plans to close its heavy maintenance facility at Port Columbus airport which will lead to 161 workers being laid off.

The workers, comprised of mostly mechanics, have been offered the chance to transfer to other Republic operations across the US.

The parent group of Republic Airlines and Shuttle America will begin layoffs from June 20 with staff to receive full pay and benefits until August 2.

The latest set of cuts is part of the Indianapolis-based airline group’s reorganisation following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in February.
