Avionics firm Thomas Global Systems has launched a new LCD cockpit display unit as a replacement for the Rockwell Collins’ EFD-86 flight display unit, which is installed as standard on aircraft including the Saab 340 and EMB 120.

According to Thomas Global its new LCD unit, TFD-8601, is close to 50 per cent lighter than the cathode ray tube display unit it replaces, generates less heat and consumes less power.

The “plug and play” retrofit is ADS-B compliant and requires no changes to wiring or additional training, says Thomas Global.

The OEM also claims that the new unit will help to reduce maintenance costs.

Deliveries of the TFD-8601 will start next month.
