Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air has placed an order with Pratt & Whitney for the engine manufacturer’s PurePower Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine to power 110 of its A321neo aircraft.

As part of the $2.5bn agreement, Wizz Air has also entered into a long-term engine fleet management programme with Pratt & Whitney to provide it with engine maintenance services.

Wizz Air will begin taking deliveries of the Airbus narrowbodies from 2019 with the agreement covering an additional 90 A321neos over which Wizz Air has uncommitted purchase rights as well as a number of spare engines.

József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air, said: “Following a detailed review process we concluded that the Geared Turbofan engine delivers the best value proposition as well as maximum fuel and operational efficiency.

"These metrics will translate directly into reduced operating costs for our business.”
