EASA has certified Airbus’ new widebody, the A350-900, for extended-range twin engine aircraft operations (ETOPS) of up to 370 minutes.
The A350’s ETOPS certification is the first to be given beyond 180 minutes for a new aircraft type prior to entering service.
The EASA certificate includes ETOPS 180min in the basic specification and includes provisions for ETOPS 300min and ETOPS 370min depending on the operator’s selection.
The ETOPS 370 option sees the A350-900’s diversion distance increase to 2,500nm.
Airbus says the longer ETOPS options will be particularly useful for Airlines operating routes between Australia, South Africa, South America, South East Asia and the US to operate straighter, quicker and more fuel efficient paths than aircraft with a 180 ETOPS.
