Airbus and Fokker Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the research and development of fibre metal laminate (FML) material.

Under the terms of the MoU, the two OEMs will develop the second-generation lightweight material having worked together on developing Glare, a material used on the upper fuselage and the vertical tail of the A380 since 2005.

Fokker said smart automated production technology and the next generation of fibres are “the main characteristics of the intended development.”

The MoU also includes research into automation and robotised production technology aimed at enabling high volume production rates and increase affordability for OEMs.

Hans Büthker, CEO of Fokker Technologies, said the R&D project is “an important development for future applications of FML.”
