Airservices Australia Tests Honeywell’S Smartpath

Airservices Australia has selected Honeywell’s SmartPath as the country’s first ground-based augmentation system (GBAS) to help improve operational efficiency; decrease air traffic noise at Sydney Airport; and lower maintenance costs. The system is designed to overcome instrumental landing system (ILS) limitations at airports that are experiencing high traffic volumes, making them accurate and safe enough to use for precision approach and landing. SmartPath is certified by the Federal Aviation Administration and Germany’s BAF and will complete testing and evaluation by Airservices, Sydney Airport and Qantas by the end of Q1 2013, before becoming commercially operational, pending certification by the Civil Aviation Safety Auth
