An ATR 72-600 prototype undertook its first flight on Wednesday (July 8) as part of Europe’s Clean Sky initiative which is aimed at testing technologies that will lower the environmental impact of air travel.

In the test aircraft an entire aluminum section of the aircraft’s upper fuselage has been replaced with a composite panel, into which additional acoustic damping has been embedded.

The flight also tested new structural health monitoring technologies that aims to improve the identification of micro-cracks and make maintenance easier.

ATR confirmed that a further test is scheduled “towards the end of the year”, when it will look at ways to improve the aircraft’s electrical distribution, energy dispersal and air conditioning systems.
