CFM International has gained certification from the FAA and EASA for its LEAP-1A engine which will be one of two engine options for the A320neo aircraft.

The certification means the LEAP-1A is now clear to enter service in mid-2016 as an alternative to the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G for the A320neo, which Airbus expects to gain certification for by the end of this year.

The LEAP-1A had its first flight on an A320neo in May 2015 before a second aircraft was added to the test programme in September.

CFM said that to date, the two aircraft have logged a combined total of more than 140 flights and 360 hours of flight testing.
