The European Investment Bank (EIB) is to provide €500m ($561m) of finance for Airbus’ innovation programmes.

The majority of the loan – €400m ($449m) – has been earmarked for R&D projects in France, aimed at improving the energy efficiency of aircraft and reducing their environmental impact.

This includes research into the impact of improved aerodynamics.

The new agreement means the EIB, owned by the European Union, has lent the OEM €1.3bn ($1.5bn) since 2011.
