GKN Adopts OOA Processes For New Wing Structure

GKN Aerospace has completed a composite manufacturing and assembly research programme using out of autoclave (OOA) processes and materials, and PI shaped woven preforms; these technologies could potentially improve future manufacture and assembly of large composite aero-structures. The OOA Composite Processing Phase II programme used OOA materials to design, develop and manufacture a more cost effective, lightweight and blended aircraft wing box. The wing box, which is assembled using fastener free PI joints, features stiffened skins, complex contours and four different stringer shapes.
