The UK’s business secretary Vince Cable has announced £6m ($9.6m) of government funding for research into landing gears at Messier-Bugatti-Dowty’s Gloucester facility.

The OEM, a subsidiary of French firm Safran, will use the finance to explore how aircraft landing gears can be better designed and manufactured for smoother landings.

Earlier this month, US low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines chose Messier-Bugatti-Dowty wheels, brakes and MRO services for its entire fleet of Airbus single aisle aircraft.

This includes 52 A320s and A319s in operation, along with the 45 A320neo and 35 A320ceo aircraft that Spirit has on order.
