Airbus has chosen avionics giant Rockwell Collins to provide an electronic flight bag (EFB) interface and communication unit (EICU) as an option for its A320 and A330 families.

The EICU system will enable EFBs to connect with onboard and external networks, such as maintenance systems, the aircraft’s avionics and airline operating centres.

The unit automatically uses most cost-effective channel available to download or upload data to external networks, be it mobile networks, wi-fi or satellite communications.

It also uses connectivity at the gate to automatically upload quick access recorder files to airline servers Rockwell Collins expects the EICU to be certified next year.
