Major airlines are already allocating budget to invest in technology that will enable them to leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) to improve their business, according to SITA.

In its latest annual survey of IT heads at the top 200 passenger carriers, SITA found that 86 per cent of respondents expected that IoT would deliver “clear benefits” to their business in the next three years, with more than half planning investments in IoT during that time period and 37 per cent having already allocated budget to it.

The survey results show that investments in IoT are currently focused on improving the passenger experience, at check-in and luggage collection, for example.

The survey also revealed that maintenance departments in airlines were far ahead of their colleagues in the use of tablets, with 57 per cent of respondents deploying the devices to MRO technicians, compared with just 32 per cent who deployed tablets to cabin staff.
