German flag carrier Lufthansa has outsourced its IT infrastructure services division and staff to technology giant IBM for $1.25bn.

According to IBM, it will make the airline’s IT processes more efficient and increase Lufthansa’s focus on cloud computing.

It is estimated that the seven-year deal could save the airline around €70m ($87.4m) a year.

The sale, first outlined in October, is part of Lufthansa’s plan to reduce costs as it looks to increase its competitiveness against growing carriers in Europe and the Middle East.
